The statistical trilemma: built-in limitations of international economic statistics

Economic statistics are central to global economic governance. They the informational background Sustainable Development Goals, conditional lending by international organizations, and other dimensions of development policy. But there is a growing chasm between aspirations for what they can deliver on ground. We argue that these shortcomings rooted in we call trilemma official statistics, general limitation goes beyond methodological deficiencies individual indicators. Data users demand should (a) use harmonized standards be comparable, (b) guided prescriptive enough guarantee reliability prevent manipulation, (c) suited local socioeconomic contexts. Yet as show, complex only satisfy two conditions at once. Importantly, increase suitability such contexts if make concessions either prescriptiveness or harmonization. examine three cases detail: national accounts poverty lines, unemployment statistics. To strengthen external validity, also briefly consider inflation, trade, debt additional cases.
